Academics and Sports The Cub Scout Academics and Sports program is a great way to help fulfill the aims of Scouting — building character, developing citizenship, and encouraging mental and physical fitness. This month you might feature these belt loops and pins. - Nutrition: Eating a balanced diet means eating foods that are good for you and that give your body the vitamins and other nutrients it needs to stay healthy. (Requirements) - Physical Fitness: Being in good physical condition will serve boys well today and in their future. Encourage the boys in your den and pack to earn the Physical Fitness belt loop and pin. (Requirements) Outing in Scouting - Cub Scouts: Pick up some healthy food and have a picnic outdoors if weather permits. Make sure to do a thorough litter sweep when they’re done. - Webelos Scouts: After the Webelos den leader has completed Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders training, have a campout and focus on cooking skills in the out-of-doors. Resource Highlight: Den and Pack Ribbons Boys in the den respond to recognition. Many occasions present themselves to use different forms of recognition. An award ribbon can be presented to different dens to recognize their attendance at the pack meeting, their advancement as a group, even parent involvement. Many different types of awards are available from your local council service center. Pack Meeting The monthly pack meeting brings together boys from every den, their leaders, and their families, to participate in a large-scale event that serves as a showcase for everything the boys have learned and done in their individual den meetings. The pack meeting gives the boys a larger experience beyond their own den, and helps them to connect their individual activities to the entire Cub Scouting program. Our next pack meeting will be held on Monday, May 21, in the open air behind Bob Beard Elementary School. The official start time is 6:30 pm, but a "gathering activity" begins at 6:15 pm. Participants in the "gathering activity" could receive a special door prize. All boys are encouraged to sit with their parents and family. Please come early and participate! Please bring something to sit on and don't forget something to keep everyone hydrated! See you at the pack meeting! National Summertime Award Summer is rapidly approaching and it's a great time to earn the National Summertime Award! The National Summertime Award will be presented to every boy who attends at least one summertime pack activity each of the three summer months - June through August. Our first activity - Flags at Ft. Sam - will count for June. There is a different award for each level of Cub Scouting - Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos. In addition, every den that has at least 50% of its boys participate each month will receive an award too. The National Summertime Award - a really cool award! Flags at Ft. Sam The Memorial Day Holiday takes place on the last Monday of May. This holiday commemorates United States service men and women who died in military service for their country. We invite all Scouts and their families to participate in the placement of flags on the gravesites of veterans and their dependants. The event takes place Friday, May 25 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209. Orientation begins at 4:45 pm and flag placement at 5:00 pm. Please dress appropriately to honor our service men and women - Cub Scout uniform for the boys. Please bring adequate liquids for hydration and a mallet to help secure the flags. Despite what others may do, we request that the boys take time at each gravesite to plant the flag, take two steps back, and render a salute for two seconds before moving on to the next gravesite. There is no requirement for you to plant flags on every gravesite - there is a requirement for you to render proper respect for those who gave their lives for us. |
